Saddlers shun Gerrard offer

Walsall manager Jimmy Mullen has confirmed that his club turned down a deadline day bid from Southampton for defender Anthony Gerrard. The 22-year-old recently handed in a transfer request at the Bescot Stadium, but Mullen believes that Gerrard still has a major role to play for the Saddlers this season. He told the Express & Star: "The player will not be sold unless we receive a substantial offer. The offer that we got was not acceptable. "It is in the past and we are just looking forward. I spoke to him and he was fine, there were no problems. "If he plays with the same level of commitment and desire he has shown throughout his time here, then he will continue to be a very valuable member of our squad."
