Saddlers star seals last-gasp point

Parkin earned the spot kick himself when he was brought down by Simon Francis just inside the box after the fourth official had signalled four minutes of added time. The Saddlers had taken a 12th-minute lead when 18-year-old defender Darryl Westlake, making his league debut, delivered a free-kick which Troy Deeney flicked on for Steve Jones to score with a stooping header. Southend were not causing too many problems for the home defence until Dwayne Mattis was sent off for a second bookable offence after an hour, and then the Shrimpers began to pile on the pressure and a howler by home keeper Clayton Ince handed them the equaliser in the 66th minute. The Trinidad and Tobago international threw a sloppy ball out straight to the opposition and Lee Barnard was left with a simple goal. Southend seemed to be heading for victory when substitute Dougie Freedman headed in a cross from Franck Moussa with ten minutes remaining, but Walsall grabbed a point with their late leveller.
