Saddlers spirit pleases Smith

Dean Smith was `as proud as a peacock` after Walsall staged a dramatic fightback to earn a 3-3 draw at Tranmere in his first game as caretaker manager. Smith, in charge following Chris Hutchings` dismissal this week, saw his side take the lead after 32 minutes through Matthew Richards. However, a Richards own goal and strikes from Aaron Cresswell and Lateef Elford-Alliyu put Rovers in control. Jon Macken gave Walsall hope with five minutes remaining before Andy Butler headed an equaliser in injury time. "I`m really pleased. It shows the players have got character and heart and are willing to fight for survival in this division," said Smith. "We kept plugging away when all seemed lost and got our reward through effort and desire. "I was as proud as a peacock at the end of the game for the lads. They simply refused to accept defeat."
