Hughes, a former Northampton and Everton reserves captain, is Chris Hutchings' first signing of the summer and the centre-back is delighted to be a Saddlers player. Speaking to the club's official website, he said: "I'm pleased that everything is sorted and now I just want to get my head down and work hard. "This is a club that is known for bringing players through and developing them. I know Anthony Gerrard and Daniel Fox and they have both benefited from being here. "The set-up here has really surprised me. The training ground facilities are first-class and there is a real homely feel about the place. Everyone has made me feel welcome and that is exactly what you need when you arrive at a new club. "Northampton offered me a new deal and there were other clubs interested in me, but the challenge here appealed to me. I am a passionate player who always gives 100%. I want to play at the highest level possible and know that League One is going to be a stern test this year, but I am looking forward to it."
