Relief for Smith after important win

Walsall manager Dean Smith was relieved to see his team pip relegation rivals Dagenham 1-0 with a late goal which boosted their chances of avoiding the drop. Teenage substitute Will Grigg netted the winner nine minutes from time to secure the Saddlers a deserved victory. Walsall are now 22nd in League One, three points from safety, with Dagenham one point and two places behind them. Smith said: "We could have been out of sight in the first half with the chances we created. "I said to the lads at half-time `don't let them get out of jail`. I thought we would get more chances in the second half, and apart from winning I was pleased as well to see us finish with a clean sheet. "I thought the lads performed well, created chances, and Jon Macken was outstanding up front with his link-up play. "He held the ball fantastically and the only thing missing for him was a goal, but that will come. He shaved the post a couple of times in the first half and he must have run over a black cat."
