Nicholls to remain patient

Walsall striker Alex Nicholls has insisted he is happy to remain patient as he waits for a first-team place in Chris Hutchings' side.

The 21-year-old made a scoring start in the Carling Cup on Tuesday, but is expected to return the bench for Saturday's home clash with Southend after being amongst the substitutes in the season opener.

"I did well in pre-season when I played up front," he told BBC West Midlands.

"The manager knows I'll play anywhere to get a shirt. I really want to improve this year.

"He went with Troy and Sam and that's fair enough. He's the manager and he gets paid to make those decisions.

"It's down to me to get over the disappointment of that and try and kick on."

Troy Deeney and new signing Sam Parkin impressed as a partnership in Walsall's opening day 1-0 defeat of Brighton.
