Hutchings hails Saddlers

Walsall manager Chris Hutchings was relieved to see his struggling team give a fine performance and beat promotion-chasing Carlisle 2-1. Walsall fell behind in the 26th minute when, after James Walker had saved from Frank Simek, Mike Grella followed up to smash a low drive into the net. But they were level after 37 minutes, Matt Richards sending a superb free-kick from just outside the box curling into the top right-hand corner of the net. And eight minutes into the second half Richards struck again, taking a short free-kick from Richard Taundry in his stride and lashing a left-foot shot low past Adam Collin. Hutchings said: "I was very pleased with the performance and result, especially after we went a goal down against the run of play. "The lads showed great character and resilience, with some very good play and two excellent goals. "There were some good performances and Andy Butler (central defender making home debut) showed his experience in that he knows how to play the game."
