Hughes battling but Byfield is back
Centre-back Hughes is struggling with a slight hip problem but is expected to battle through and take his place in Chris Hutchings' starting XI.
Striker Byfield should receive confirmation from the Football League in time to feature having signed a short-term deal with the midlands outfit on Friday morning. Should he feature, it will be his first appearance since leaving the club seven years ago.
Otherwise, Hutchings has no injury or suspension concerns ahead of what is an important game at this early stage of the season.
The Saddlers are still searching for their first home win of the campaign following a draw against Southend and defeat against Leeds, while last weekend's 2-0 loss at Charlton will certainly have left many players champing at the bit for a return to action.
Back-to-back defeats against two of League One's promotion favourites will not have dented morale too much, though, and victory against the Gills would put the midlands outfit on the right track.
