Walsall chief executive Stefan Gamble has backed caretaker-manager Dean Smith to steady the ship after being placed in temporary charge at the Banks's Stadium. The head of youth takes over the reigns following the dismissal of Chris Hutchings and assistant Martin O'Connor, with Gamble insisting his insider knowledge will be invaluable. He told the club's official website: "Dean is an excellent coach who knows this football club inside out. He played and captained the club during his early years as a professional footballer and has been a part of the coaching staff, as Head of youth, for the last 18 months. "He has also had experience at first-team level having assisted Martin Ling at Leyton Orient prior to his arrival here at the Banks's Stadium. "Dean had 15 years as a professional footballer, has his Uefa Pro-License, is an accomplished coach and has a working knowledge of Walsall Football Club. He is very well placed to take temporary charge during this period."
