Friendlies are necessary - Hutchings

Walsall boss Chris Hutchings reckons pre-season friendlies are an important learning curve for his side ahead of the new campaign. The former Wigan manager saw his side suffer a 4-0 defeat to Premier League side Wolves on Tuesday night, but believes the experience will benefit the Saddlers in the long-run. "It was a tough work-out for us, but that is exactly what we wanted," he told Walsall's official website. "We want to see how we react and deal with certain situations when we are put under the cosh in order to stop teams playing because this will invariably happen during the course of the season ahead. "The players have to know their roles and be adaptable. "It is all about getting our own match fitness levels up and building an understanding."
