Wales beat Belgium in the Euro qualifiers - what does it mean?

The Welsh national team have pulled off an unexpected 1-0 victory against Belgium in the Euro 2016 qualifying round. Yes, you read that right.

And why not? They’ve got one of the world’s best players in Gareth Bale, and they’ve firmly had their eye on the ball so far in this tournament. Time to end… oh we’ve lost count of how many years of hurt.

Who scored?

Who else? Gareth whistled in a strike at 25 minutes. It was his 17th goal for his country, scored on the occasion of his 50th cap. His soaring Welsh pride surely couldn’t have been higher, with a sell-out 33,000 crowd packing out Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium.

So Wales were convincing?

Not really. After Bale scored, Eden Hazard and company laid full siege to the Welsh goal at times. But they just couldn’t find a way through an organised home defence.

Tense last few minutes?

You bet.

Was this supposed to happen?

Belgium came into the game top of Group B, ranked second in the world and having lost only one of their last 17 matches – last summer’s World Cup quarter-final against Argentina. So, no then.

What does it all mean?

This could end Wales’ 58-year wait for a major tournament appearance – their last being the 1958 World Cup. Now Wales have a three-point lead at the top of Group B with four games left to play, and two more wins would almost certainly guarantee their presence at the European Championships in France next summer.

Bring on the Euros!
