Ryan Giggs hailed Friday as the "greatest night in Welsh football history" after Wales beat Belgium to reach the semi-final of a major tournament for the first time.

The former Wales captain, speaking in his role as a pundit on ITV, praised Chris Coleman's side's performance in their 3-1 victory.

Giggs told ITV: "I'm so proud. It's quite simply the greatest night in Welsh football history, the best result in Welsh football history but more impressively, it was the best performance.

"To make a team ranked second in the world look so ordinary and in the end win comfortably is very impressive.

"They were the better team in every area - defensively, offensively, they won every challenge, and they looked comfortable.

"Of course Belgium had their moments, but so did Wales. And three fantastic goals."

Former Wales forward Dean Saunders also heaped praise on the team and management.

He told BBC Sport: "These boys and Chris Coleman, they should be proud of themselves. They've made everyone proud in the nation.

"What about the goals we scored? The performance, everything - just spot on."

"There are lots of people who deserve credit. Chris Coleman, Gary Speed, John Toshack, Brian Flynn, the FA. Everybody's got a plan in place, and look what happens when you put a plan in place."
