Steve Morison is set to crown a dream year with a first cap for Wales in their friendly meeting with Luxembourg at Llanelli's Parc y Scarlets tomorrow evening.
The 26-year-old striker finished the 2008/09 season as a non-league player having failed to guide Stevenage back into the Football League despite a prolific campaign. But since then there has been plenty to celebrate for Morison, who followed a move to Millwall with 20 goals as the Lions sealed promotion to the Championship via the play-offs.
"It's fantastic. It's been a great experience and it will top it all off if I earn my first cap on Wednesday night." said the former Bishop's Stortford player.
"A year ago I was playing non-league football so playing international football was a very, very long way from my mind. Then I was concentrating on playing League One football and getting Millwall promoted."
Morison previously represented England at non-league level but he has a Welsh grandmother and Wales boss John Toshack was quick to follow up initial interest with a first call-up.
He added: "I made Wales aware, and I think they were aware, I could possibly play and we did the relevant checks and it took one phone call to say I'd love to play. I'm a better player than I was last year and hopefully I can push on now and get a few international caps with Wales."
Wales will look to build on encouraging form that brought friendly wins over Scotland and Croatia last season. A comprehensive victory over Luxembourg is now needed to set Toshack's side up for a Euro 2012 qualifying group that also includes England, Switzerland, Bulgaria and Montenegro.
"It's a game we need to win," said Morison. "We need to go into the qualifiers with some confidence and we want a good performance.
"We want to get a settled team together. We started on the training ground this morning and we need to carry it on until Wednesday.
"We think the group is wide open and beating Luxembourg will stand us in good stead. We can beat these teams on our day but we need to make sure we're all fit, ready and raring to go."
