Ledley fit for Wales' crucial Euro 2016 Russia clash

Ledley broke his leg when playing for Crystal Palace on May 7, less than six weeks ago, but was still picked for Chris Coleman's 23 in France.

After featuring as a substitute in Wales' opening 2-1 win over Slovakia on Saturday, the former Celtic man began against England in Lens but was withdrawn on 67 minutes after colliding with the English match-winner.

The impact was on the same leg in which Ledley broke his fibula last month, but after the game he confirmed his availability for Wales' crucial tie against Group B's bottom side on Monday.

"It is okay, I felt my calf tightening up a bit during half-time and once I got a bang on it, it stiffened up a bit and we needed to take the precaution with it," said the 29-year-old.

"I did not need to risk it as there is another game to go. I could have played on but the lads said not to risk it. I did not expect to play 90 minutes out there and it was just good to start the game.

"That is football, you go to hit people and it was an accident how Sturridge came in, I will come back stronger."

Sturridge's strike was a dagger to the heart of Welsh fans as they were dreaming of going into the final pool games atop Group B.

They now need to beat Russia to guarantee qualification for the knock-out stages but Ledley has been heartened by his nation's performance in France, both on the pitch and in the stands, and called on his countrymen to continue their brave start against Leonid Slutsky's men on Monday.

"No one likes having that happen with barely any time left on the clock, we had defended brilliantly as a unit, we just could not see it out," he added.

"The fans have been brilliant and we just need to continue what we have been doing both on the pitch and off the pitch.

"Nothing changes. It was the last few seconds that cost us, there are a lot of positives we can take and maybe the thing we can improve on is keeping the ball a bit better.

"Russia are a strong team, well organised. We need a point or three to get through and that is our aim, to go there and get the job done."

Wales face Russia in Toulouse at 8pm on Monday, June 20.
