Former Wales international Chris Marustik has died at the age of 54, following illness.

Swansea and Cardiff paid tribute on their official websites to Marustik, who won six caps and also played for Newport.

He made his debut for Swansea in 1978, featuring in the club's 1978/79 and 1980/81 promotion campaigns as the club climbed the leagues under manager John Toshack.

He played regularly for the Swans in Division One, netting 11 goals in 152 league games and earning an international debut in 1982 against Spain.

Current Swansea coach Alan Curtis has fond memories of a player best remembered as a full-back.

He told his club's official website: "I t's far too young, it's tragic. He was a big character; great company and a fantastic player.

"He was a big part of our team; a player you could always rely on. He was never overawed by the occasion, even playing in the old First Division against the big teams.

"I remember we were due to play Manchester United, which was a massive game for us at the time.

"Everyone was raving about England international Steve Coppell and they were all warning Chris not to get overawed by the winger's reputation.

"Chris turned around to us and said he had never heard of him - and he was serious. But he was such a good player that he never gave Coppell a kick all game. His loss is a such sad one."

Another former Wales international, Ian Walsh, tweeted about his former team-mate: "Heard last night the very sad news about Chris Marustik. Great player, great company, great lad! Thoughts are with his family."

Marustik left Swansea in 1985 for rivals Cardiff, and a Bluebirds statement rea d: "Cardiff City Football Club were saddened to hear about the passing of former Cardiff City midfield player, Chris Marustik.

"He made 61 League and Cup appearances for City over two seasons, leaving in 1987 to join Barry Town. He spent time with Newport County before finishing his playing career in the sunny climes of Australia.

"We wish to offer sincere condolences to Chris's family and friends."
