Wales Under-21s kept up the good work started by Gareth Bale and company by opening their 2017 European Championship campaign with a 3-1 victory over Bulgaria Under-21s at the Cardiff City Stadium.

Buoyed by the senior side's Euro 2016 win in Israel last weekend and the healthy position they find themselves in as far as qualifying for the finals in France is concerned, Geraint Williams' young Dragons were quick out of the blocks.

Tom O'Sullivan scored twice inside the first 13 minutes before his Cardiff team-mate Josh Yorwerth's close range header put Wales 3-0 ahead at half-time.

Nikola Kolev's fine 51st minute strike from the edge of the area gave Bulgaria hope and the visitors were far better after the interval.

Bulgaria struggled to contain the hard-running forward partnership of Wes Burns and O'Sullivan which was responsible for Wales' first two goals.

Burns outstripped Radoslav Terziev after nine minutes and O'Sullivan met his cross to score with a powerful header off the far post.

O'Sullivan soon took another Burns pass to finish even more emphatically with a thunderous drive and Bulgaria's fate was sealed when goalkeeper Aleksandar Lyubenov made a hash of Ryan Hedges' free-kick and Yorwerth was on the spot to head home.

Wales lost O'Sullivan to injury at the break and they were not the same force, Kolev pegging a goal back before goalkeeper Christian Dibble prevented any late scares by snuffing out Milcho Angelov and Antonio Vutov in the final 10 minutes.
