Former Italy striker Luca Toni to retire at end of season

World Cup-winning striker Luca Toni intends to call time on his 22-year, 15-club career at the end of the season.

The 38-year-old Hellas Verona forward has scored only once in Serie A this season despite earning a share of the Capocannoniere top-scorer award - alongside Inter Milan's Mauro Icardi - with his 22-goal haul in 2014-15.

With Hellas still winless this term and seemingly bound for relegation, Toni would like to do everything he can to keep the club in the top flight before retiring in May.

He told reporters following Verona's 1-0 home defeat to Empoli: "We want to do it, we should not give up now.

"Maybe it's time for me to retire, so I want to do so having helped Verona survive."

Toni, who made his senior debut for hometown club Modena in 1994, spent much of his early career bouncing around provincial clubs before making a name for himself with scoring sprees at Palermo and Fiorentina.

He helped Italy win the World Cup in Germany in 2006 and moved to the country the following summer when Bayern Munich paid Fiorentina 11.5million euros for his services.

Since returning from the Bundesliga he has represented Roma and Genoa and, following a brief stint with Al Nasr and a fleeting return to Fiorentina, he joined Verona in 2013 and relaunched his career as a prolific marksman.
