Venezuela's Vargas suffers more injury woes

Venezuelan international Ronald Vargas has been ruled out for several months after suffering a second successive knee injury in a Belgian Cup match on Wednesday.

The 24-year-old forward, who plays for Anderlecht, had only returned to action three weeks ago after spending eight months on the sidelines with ruptured knee ligaments.

However the South American was left in despair after the same knee gave way only a minute into the match against third division Ruppel-Boom, who went on to score a shock 2-1 win over the Brussels-based side.

"We fear that's him out for the rest of the season," said Anderlecht's medical service.

Some reports Thursday said the injury could end Vargas's career, with Anderlecht coach Ariel Jacobs adding: "It's a very complicated injury. It's a lot more serious than just a sprain."

Vargas, who has scored three goals in 14 appearances for his country, is to undergo scans on Thursday and Friday to determine the full extent of the injury.
