Villa honoured by rumours

Valencia striker David Villa says he is honoured to have been linked with a number of top European clubs this summer, even though he looks increasingly likely to stay at the Mestalla.

The 27-year-old Spain ace has attracted interested from Real Madrid, Barcelona, Chelsea and Manchester United, despite Los Che insisting that their man is not for sale.

Villa told Marca: "I am proud that four of the world's best clubs have asked Valencia about acquiring my services.

"I managed to overcome all that by completely removing all thoughts of it from my head."

Valencia spokesman Jordi Bruixola had previously stated that no formal bids had been lodged for Villa, saying: "I want to make it clear, we have no offer for Villa and we don't understand why people are insisting this.

"We want these rumours to end so that the player, as well as the club, are given calm to create a competitive team.

"We will have a meeting with him and explain to him the project. These past few days have been hard for him and for the club.

"There has been a lot of pressure from outside, but we trust him and we will show him the ambitious project."
