Valencia president Layhoon Chan: Gary Neville never lost board's support

Valencia president Layhoon Chan insists the players are fully behind Gary Neville and the club did not consider sacking him as manager during a poor run of form.

Neville was appointed as boss at the Mestalla in December but a run of nine Primera Division matches without a win under the England coach left some fans calling for his dismissal.

The former Manchester United defender has overseen an upturn in results of late, however, with Sunday's 2-1 win over Granada their third victory in the space of a week.

And Chan claims the 41-year-old - who replaced Nuno - retains the full support of the club and will remain as manager with his contract due to expire in the summer.

"You cannot dismiss a coach for a poor run when the players believe in him - they believe in Gary Neville," she told Spanish sports daily newspaper AS.

"I do understand the football culture in Spain, but we have belief in what we are doing and we will continue in the direction which we believe is the right one. And with Gary we have been doing well; now the victories are coming.

"We are looking to secure a project. The first year went better than we expected, this year hasn't but we will continue to keep investing."

Former Real Madrid manager Rafael Benitez, who guided Valencia to two Primera Division titles during his three-year stint between 2001 and 2004, has been linked with a return to the Mestalla.

Yet Chan refused to be drawn on the speculation. She added: "We cannot speak about next season at this moment in time."
