Sir Alex Ferguson believes former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has what it takes to succeed as Valencia manager.

There was widespread surprise on Wednesday when it was announced the England coach would be taking the Mestalla hot-seat for the remainder of the campaign.

Neville will work with younger brother Phil, who has been coaching at the Primera Division club since July, and Ferguson believes they will do well at the Spanish club.

"Gary has many attributes that suggest he will be successful in management," the Neville brothers' former United manager told Sky Sports.

"His leadership skills are strong, he's honest and he's hard working.

"He is the type of character who is not afraid of making big decisions, which is a vital skill when leading.

"I think he'll do well and I wish him, and his brother Phil, good luck."
