Dani Parejo's late spot-kick saw Valencia edge past previously-unbeaten Alaves 2-1 to secure their first victory of the season.

The hosts, playing their first game since the departure of coach Pako Ayestaran on Tuesday, found themselves in front after 28 minutes when Alaves defender Victor Laguardia nodded Jose Gaya's searching cross into the back of his own net.

The La Liga newcomers equalised on the brink of half-time when Gaizka Toquero headed in from Aleksandar Katai's corner.

After squandering several second-half chances, Valencia finally found the winner from the spot in the 88th minute after Marcos Llorente had fouled substitute Zakaria Bakkali in the area.

The home side's first meaningful chance came after 10 minutes when Rodrigo Moreno dragged his 25-yard effort wide of Fernando Pacheco's near post.

Valencia took the lead midway through the first half when Gaya sent in a delightful cross from the left wing, with Laguardia inadvertently steering the ball beyond Pacheco.

But Alaves were back on terms in the 45th minute thanks to Toquero, who was given a free header just outside the six-yard box and duly headed home to level things up.

Valencia, led by caretaker boss Voro Gonzalez, had a good opportunity to regain the lead in the 58th minute when Eliaquim Mangala got on the end of Gaya's cross but the Manchester City loanee headed against a post.

The hosts snatched all three points - their first of the season - when Parejo coolly slotted home from the penalty spot after Bakkali had been brought down in the box.
