World Cup 2014 - 83 days to go: Teams - Uruguay

Uruguay have made twelve appearances at the World Cup, winning the tournament on two occasions, the inaugural home tournament in 1930 and again in 1950.

Uruguay struggled to qualify for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, finishing fifth in the CONMEBOL qualification tournament they needed to beat the fifth-placed team in the Asian Football Confederation to secure their passage.

Despite four wins and five defeats in qualification, Uruguay are ranked 7th by FIFA and were one of the seeded teams when the draw was made for the World Cup and will face Italy, England and Costa Rica, one of the toughest groups. Luis Suarez holds the record for most goals ever scored by a Uruguayan with 38 in 77 appearances, surpassing Diego Forlan’s 36 goals.

Diego Forlan holds the most caps record with 108, a remarkable record for a forward. Forlan was called up in March 2014 and is the oldest member of the current squad at 34-years-of-age. Diego Lugano who plays his football at West Brom is the current captain of a squad that has players who play their club football in Italy, Portugal, Spain, Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Turkey, Japan and England.

England will need to look for a win against Uruguay if they hope to progress beyond the group stages especially if they draw or lose against Italy in their first match.
