Uruguay’s world cup chances might have suffered a huge blow after Luis Suarez was injured during a training session.
Suarez has reportedly a damaged meniscus and is expected to undergo surgery. The recovery time in case of such a surgery usually ranges from 4-6 weeks, but the Uruguay FA are hopeful that their best player will be ready in time to take part at some stage in the tournament.
It is expected however, that the Liverpool ace will miss most of Uruguay’s group stage matches, if not all. Uruguay are placed in Group D, alongside England, Italy and Costa Rica making the group one of the toughest in the whole tournament.
Suarez has been in stunning form this season, helping Liverpool secure a Champions League spot.
Thanks to his performances Liverpool managed to finish as the EPL runners up, only two points behind champions Manchester City.
Suarez notched up 31 goals from 33 appearances and was named the PFA and Football Writer’s Player of the Year.
According to an interview given to ‘ovaicondigital.com’, Roberto Pastoriza- secretary of the Uruguayan national team said that they were quite “optimistic” about Suarez’ chances playing in the World Cup.
Interestingly enough it is believed that Suarez underwent a surgery earlier on the meniscus of his right knee while still playing for Nacional.
It was in 2006, a few months before the the striker immigrated to Europe, to enroll in Groningen in the Netherlands.
