US bemused by disallowed goal

United States midfielder Landon Donovan has criticised the referee for a lack of communication after he ruled out a potential match-winning goal in their 2-2 draw against Slovenia. The US had recovered from being 2-0 down at half-time to level their Group C encounter before referee Koman Coulibaly of Mali took centre stage. Maurice Edu forced home the loose ball from a late corner but the official brought play back for holding in the box when replays showed that a host of American players were in fact being impeded by desperate Slovenia defenders. "I'm assuming it was a foul somewhere, it couldn't have been offside," said Donovan. "We asked many times who the foul was by but he wouldn't or couldn't explain it. I don't know what to think of the call, I didn't see a foul. "To be honest I'm not sure how much English he speaks but when we asked in a non-confrontational manner why he had given the foul, he just ignored us."
