Suspended Jones set to train with US soccer squad
Jermaine Jones' suspension by the German soccer federation is not expected to prevent him from taking part in a pair of US national team's exhibition matches later this month.
The US squad will face Venezuela on January 21 and Panama on January 25.
Jones, who has played in 14 games for the Americans, is to join the US team at their training camp in Los Angeles on Saturday.
"Obviously this is a very difficult moment for Jermaine," American coach Jurgen Klinsmann said Friday.
"He regrets the incident and has apologized to the player, his coaches and his teammates. He respects the decision of the German federation and accepts the punishment."
The Schalke club midfielder was slapped with an eight week ban by the German soccer federation on January 5 for intentionally stepping on the foot of midfielder Marco Reus of Borussia Moenchengladbach last month.
The suspension means he is not allowed to play in any competitive or exhibition matches for Schalke until the beginning of March.
