Edu aiming for World Cup place

    04 Dec 2009 - 09:56:05

Rangers midfielder Maurice Edu has admitted he is desperately hoping to return from injury in time to play his way into the USA's World Cup squad.

Edu has been sidelined since summer knee surgery but has returned to training in recent weeks and has tentatively pencilled in his return for the Old Firm clash with Celtic on January 3.

"I wanted to get back sooner so I could play in some Champions League games for Rangers," he said.

"That didn't happen so I just want to get back as quickly as possible to help the team out.

"The long-term goal is to get back in to the World Cup team.

"The fact that we have qualified is great for the country and myself and (Gers team-mate) DaMarcus Beasley want to go to South Africa.

"Right now the knee is feeling pretty good and hopefully I'm back sooner rather than later."

The former Toronto FC player has won 11 international caps after stepping up from the under-23 squad in 2007.
