Warm-up win for United States

Substitutes Mix Diskerud and Aron Johannsson lifted the United States to a 2-0 World Cup warm-up win over Azerbaijan in San Francisco.

Norway-born Diskerud scored a scrappy 75th-minute opener and Johannsson, Alabama-born and of Icelandic descent, headed the second six minutes later, both from set-pieces by fellow substitute Brad Davis.

Jurgen Klinsmann's side, who were without star man Clint Dempsey due to a groin problem, struggled to break down their unheralded opponents until Davis' deliveries opened the game up.

The deadlock was broken when his free-kick was nodded down by Diskerud to fellow midfielder Michael Bradley. The latter's shot was cleared off the line but Diskerud, who had been on the field only four minutes, tucked away the rebound.

Johannsson then rose to head in Davis' corner and clinch victory.

The States will head to the World Cup without Landon Donovan, a surprise omission from Klinsmann's final 23-man squad.

Donovan's number 10 shirt was passed to Diskerud for the Azerbaijan game but he told ESPN: "For me, it's just a number. I feel like I'm just borrowing it.

"We'll play together someday and he'll get it back."
