American international Steven Cherundolo will miss his club Hanover's pre-season preparations after injuring his ankle in the CONCACAF Gold Cup final, his coach Mirko Slomka revealed on Wednesday.

"It's very bad news because it will upset our preparations," said Hanover coach Slomka in a statement.

"But I'm convinced that Steven will very quickly become a major element of our team again."

Cherundolo, a 32-year-old defender, twisted his ankle and had to be replaced in the 11th minute of the USA's 4-2 loss to Mexico in the Gold Cup final in Pasadena, California last Saturday.

He is expected to be out for around four weeks.

Cherundolo skippered Hanover to a fourth-place finish in the 2010-11 Bundesliga season.

Hanover's first official match next season will be at Anker Wismar in the first round of the German Cup on July 30, before they host Hoffenheim on the opening day of the new Bundesliga season on August 6.
