Donovan began his senior career at Bayer Leverkusen in 2001, but was soon sent out on loan to San Jose Earthquakes in the MLS.
He helped the Earthquakes to championship successes in 2001 and 2003, and was named US Player of the Year for 2003 and 2004 (an award he'd win again in 2009).
Donovan joined LA Galaxy in 2005 and was part of the side that welcomed David Beckham to the MLS in 2007.
In 2009 a strong season saw him named MLS MVP and prompted Everton to bring Donovan to Goodison Park on loan in January 2010.
A veteran of 121 international caps, Donovan will be appearing at his third World Cup Finals in South Africa, and was part of the US side that advanced to the quarter-finals in 2002.
