Ukraine goalkeeper Olexandr Shovkovskiy admitted that his side's World Cup campaign had ended in disappointment after a 3-0 quarter-final defeat by Italy.

The Dynamo Kyiv custodian was at fault for the Azzurri's opening goal by Gianluca Zambrotta and accepted that the game had not gone to plan for Oleg Blokhin's men.

He said: "We are disappointed to go home.

"We had a lot of expectations, but after a few days we will realise what we have achieved.

"I am not happy with how the game went. Italy took an early lead and it hindered us a little bit.

"We did react and Italy didn't have many chances, it was a level game, but the difference was that they made the chances that they had and we didn't.

"The important thing in this tournament is to score and we weren't able to do that."
