Ward plays down goal heroics
04 Sep 2006 - 15:21:32
Tranmere goalkeeper Gavin Ward was more sympathetic towards his opposite number Glenn Morris than in celebratory mood after scoring in his side's 3-0 win against Leyton Orient.
The veteran shot-stopper found the net with a long free-kick from just outside his area which caught out Morris and dropped over his outstretched arm and into the O's goal.
However, Ward is well aware of how Morris will have been feeling afterwards having being number two to Kevin Pressman at Leicester when Preston custodian Andy Lonergan did something similar to him almost two years ago.
He told the club's official website: "It's one of those things that happens every now and then. A friend of mine did it for Leicester a few seasons ago.
"It's not nice really because we've got a goalkeeper's union. I didn't want to celebrate too much because I felt sorry for him.
"I was aiming for Gareth Taylor and I slightly pulled it. It went towards Chris Greenacre.
"It bounced and I saw it skid up a bit. The goalkeeper went for it and touched it and until it was in the net I didn't realise what had happened."
