Thompson close to return

Tranmere Rovers have received an injury boost with the news that John Thompson is close to making a first-team return.

Thompson has been sidelined since picking up a knee problem in early February, but the on-loan Nottingham Forest defender has stepped up training and is close to full-fitness.

"John trained last week. He did an awful lot of running but not a lot of ball work," said Rovers boss Ronnie Moore.

"The six weeks (since he suffered the injury) is Saturday and we might just be pushing it a little bit for then.

"He'll have a tremendous chance for the Carlisle game (on March 30)."
