Struggling Rovers axe Barnes

Tranmere Rovers have sacked manager John Barnes and assistant Jason McAteer following a disastrous start to their reign at Prenton Park.

The future of Barnes has been the subject of intense speculation with the Merseyside club languishing in the League One relegation zone, having picked up just seven points from 11 games this season.

Barnes' appointment in June was met with raised eyebrows as his only other previous club management experience had been a much-criticised six months at the helm of Celtic almost a decade ago.

Chairman Peter Johnson told the club's official website: "Unfortunately results have not gone our way this season and we are at the wrong end of the table.

"We must now focus on finding the best possible candidate to help us climb the division."

Physio Les Parry has been placed in temporary charge and will be assisted by reserve team manager Shaun Garnett.
