Tranmere Rovers manager Brian Little has signed Preston defender Michael Jackson following the 30-year-old's decision to turn down a new Deepdale contract.

Jackson has signed a two-year deal with Tranmere after spending the last seven years at Preston.

"I am delighted to have completed the signing of Mike Jackson," Little told the club's official website.

"We have been looking around for a central defender who is the right age and has the right experience and Mike fits the bill.

"He has been playing regularly in the First Division and when we found out he was interested in signing it was great news. He also knows the club after spending time here on loan which will obviously help."

Jackson moved to Preston from Bury in March 1997 and went on to play almost 300 games for the club.

He spent a one-month spell on loan at Prenton Park midway through the 2002-03 campaign.
