Rovers confirm Barnes as boss

Tranmere Rovers have confirmed the appointment of John Barnes as their new manager.

The former Liverpool and England winger has returned to club management after having a recent spell coaching the Jamaica national team.

Barnes' only previous club management role was an unsuccessful single season at the helm of Celtic during the 1999-2000 campaign.

The 45-year-old will be assisted at Prenton Park by fellow former Liverpool player Jason McAteer.

McAteer, 37, is a former Republic of Ireland international who ended his playing career with three seasons at Tranmere.

"I'm delighted John has agreed to become our manager as he was our first choice for the position," chairman Peter Johnson told the club's official website.

"With John and Jason as the club's management team they bring a wealth of experience, knowledge and contacts within the game.

"They're a Wirral-based partnership who are very enthusiastic about what they can offer Tranmere and I look forward to watching their team play next season.

"They've both had successful careers as players and hopefully they can be successful together in management at Tranmere."

Rovers have been on the lookout for a new manager after parting company with Ronnie Moore earlier in the month.
