Tranmere Rovers full-back Gareth Roberts has signed a new two-year contract that will keep him at Prenton Park until 2006.

The 26-year-old was a key figure in Rovers' revival under new boss Brian Little, who is relieved that the Welsh international has agreed to stay on.

Little told the Daily Post: "I'm especially delighted that Gareth has signed. It's a very significant re-signing.

"It goes without saying that there has been a fair amount of interest from other clubs.

"The fact he wants to be here and to be part of what we are trying to put together is really pleasing.

"I think the signing of Gareth might just speed the last few decisions up among those who haven't signed yet. It will be a big boost for all the lads that he has decided to stay."

Roberts has made more than 230 first-team appearances for Rovers since arriving from Greek outfit Panionios in 1999, having begun his career as a trainee at Liverpool.
