Tranmere Rovers manager Ronnie Moore admitted that his players were gutted after missing out on a League One play-off place.
Moore's side looked like pipping Scunthorpe United to sixth place as they led 1-0 in the final-day showdown of the two sides, only for the Iron to score two minutes from time at Glanford Park.
Moore told the Liverpool Echo: "The players are gutted but I am proud of them. They gave their all and we have to take the disappointment on the chin.
"It was a cruel finale and I don't think we deserved it.
"We were five minutes away from the play-offs, which would have been a remarkable achievement when you consider how much money has been spent by the teams who finished above us and some of those who finished below us.
"No-one fancied us at the start of this season and we proved a few people wrong. The lads have been magnificent."
