Tranmere Rovers manager John Barnes has persuaded Alan Mahon to return to Prenton Park.
The 31-year-old left the club nine years ago and went on to have spells with Sporting Lisbon, Blackburn Rovers, Wigan Athletic and Burnley, but was released by the Clarets at the end of last season.
After watching Mahon ink a three-year contract, Barnes told Rovers' official website: "It's great to have Alan back as he's a very talented midfielder.
"We're fortunate to have got a player of Alan's quality to commit himself to the club for three seasons.
"He's a former favourite of the Tranmere fans and I'm sure they'll look forward to seeing him in action again at Prenton Park. He'll add experience to what will be a young squad next season."
