Keeper's new Rovers role

Tranmere Rovers have handed veteran goalkeeper John Achterberg a new two-year contract as player-coach at Prenton Park.

The 35-year-old Dutchman has struggled with injuries in recent times and is delighted with his new role.

He told the club's official website: "I'm delighted to be staying at the club. We couldn't agree terms last week due to my failed medical and contractual issues, but I'm pleased we have now reached an agreement.

"I have enjoyed my nine years at the club and look forward to continuing my stay here.

"I have been involved in the coaching of young goalkeepers at the club for some time and am pleased the club has given me the opportunity to make it a permanent role.

"I also hope to prove my fitness in time and be involved on the playing side."
