Tranmere Rovers have swooped to sign former Liverpool midfielder John Welsh. The former England Under-21 international, once touted as a potential partner for Reds skipper Steven Gerrard, arrives at Prenton Park on a free transfer. Welsh was released by Hull City at the end of last season and has been training with the League One club for the past two weeks. The 25-year-old is set to figure in one of Tranmere's two friendly fixtures that take place on Tuesday. "I've watched John Welsh over the years and seen the type of player he is. He's hard-working, a good tackler and distributor of the ball," said manager John Barnes. Welsh spent time in League One last season, being loaned out to Carlisle United.
