Barnes set for Tranmere job
09 Jun 2009 - 08:22:18
John Barnes is expected to return to club management with Tranmere Rovers after leaving his post as head coach of the Jamaica national team.
Barnes, whose only other experience in a club role was an unsuccessful season at Celtic in 1999/2000, has left his role with Jamaica with immediate effect after being told his contract will not be renewed.
Theodore Whitmore will instead lead the nation at next month's Gold Cup.
Barnes was unbeaten during his six-month, nine-match spell at the helm, but is now set to take the reins at Tranmere as the successor to sacked boss Ronnie Moore.
"Yes, I am disappointed that I would not be going to the Gold Cup because I could have started the contract (with Tranmere) afterwards," he said.
"But I fully accept and understand the JFF decision that they will appoint Theodore, as of now, to give him a chance to experience football at the highest level.
"I have to thank the JFF for giving me an opportunity in doing something I love.
"It is something I wanted to get involved with for a long time and they gave me that opportunity."
