Anxious wait for McAteer

Tranmere Rovers player-coach Jason McAteer is waiting to see whether he is offered a new contract to extend his stay at Prenton Park.

The 35-year-old's current deal runs out this summer and the former Republic of Ireland admits that he has other options to consider.

He told the Daily Post: "Of course I would like to sit down with Tranmere, speak to the chairman and the manager and find out whether I fit into their plans for the future.

"I have other irons in the fire, other options. But I think it's only fair to discuss things with Tranmere first.

"You have to think very hard about ending your football career because once you finish there is no coming back.

"I remember feeling I was ready to call it a day a year or two ago, then played a couple of games and realised there was still a bit of life left in these legs and still a bit of appetite to play.

"So I won't rule anything out, even though it's getting physically harder to recover from games."
