Ridehalgh out for Rovers

Rookie Tranmere boss Rob Edwards will be missing left-back Liam Ridehalgh for his first game in professional management against York.

Defender Ridehalgh suffered an ankle injury in a pre-season win at Rhyl and may not return until September as a result.

Matt Gill, one of Edwards' summer signings, is expected to overcome a knee injury, though, with the new boss adding he has known the XI he will deploy for well over a week.

Rovers, who lost both Ryan Lowe and James Wallace over the summer, will be captained by former Burton centre-back Marcus Holness this season.

York could be without summer signing Luke Summerfield for their tough trip.

The former Shrewsbury midfielder has struggled with a knee injury for much of pre-season but returned to training on Thursday. Tom Platt and Lewis Montrose will vie for a start if Summerfield fails to make it.

Striker Wes Fletcher and midfielder Josh Carson both remain sidelined with the respective knee injuries they sustained at the back end of last season, while new forward Jake Hyde is hoping to overcome an ankle knock in time to make his debut.

New recruits Dave Winfield and Lindon Meikle are both in contention for their first competitive appearances in central defence and on the wing respectively, as are left-back Femi Ilesanmi and right-back Marvin McCoy.
