Tranmere 2-1 Walsall: Match Report

Rovers unseat Saddlers

Substitute Mustafa Tiryaki earned Tranmere a 2-1 home win over Walsall just three minutes after joining the action.

It was far from a classic but on balance Rovers deserved to extend their unbeaten run to four matches.

It was 18 minutes before the first save by home goalkeeper Owain Fon Williams from a 20-yard effort by Alex Nicholls.

At the other end, Jimmy Walker comfortably held a shot from Jose Baxter before turning aside a 25-yard free-kick by the same player in the 25th minute.

Generally opportunities remained at a premium but Baxter went close again after 36 minutes with Walker this time turning his effort over the bar.

The early stages in the second half were utterly forgettable before the Merseysiders took the lead in the 59th minute. It was a great strike into the top right-hand corner by Robbie Weir from 25 yards out after being set up by Lucas Akins.

Williams saved well from Jamie Paterson after 72 minutes but Walsall levelled 60 seconds later with a close-range header by Andy Butler from Paterson's cross.

Another sub Zoumana Bakayogo set up Tiryaki for his tap in winner but Rovers rode their luck as Richard Taundry rattled the bar for Walsall with a 90th minute free-kick.
