Akinfenwa double downs Rovers

Adebayo Akinfenwa scored his first goals since August to help Gillingham beat 10-man Tranmere 2-1 at Prenton Park.

The former Northampton striker netted either side of the break for the Gills, who took advantage of Jim McNulty's straight red card - with Ryan Lowe's late strike - his 14th goal of the season - merely consolation for Tranmere.

A curling 20-yard shot from James Wallace was tipped wide by Gillingham goalkeeper Stuart Nelson, but the visitors took the lead on the stroke of half-time.

Akinfenwa's half-volley from just inside the box flew past Tranmere keeper Owain Fon Williams and into the top corner.

McNulty was sent off 10 minutes after the restart for bringing down Cody McDonald 30 yards from goal as the defender was the last man.

Then Akinfenwa, who last scored against Bristol City on August 31, got his second of the game in the 69th minute, converting from close range after his initial header from Steven Gregory's cross hit the post.

Lowe did reduce the arrears for Tranmere after 77 minutes when he rounded Nelson and fired into the unguarded net, but the hosts remain just two points above the League One relegation zone.
