Blades blunt Rovers

Tranmere were left to rue missed chances in their fight to avoid the drop after their goalless draw with Sheffield United kept them firmly in the League One danger zone.

John McMahon's men created several opportunities but in the end were forced to settle for a point.

Rovers almost took a 14th-minute lead when Ryan Lowe's strike came back off the upright before Chris Porter wasted a free header at the other end.

Lowe then slid a shot inches wide from the edge of the Blades' penalty area and Junior Brown forced Mark Howard into action .

Ash Taylor guided Brown's free-kick just beyond the far post as Rovers went close early in the second half.

Rovers striker Jake Cassidy then saw his header float shy of the top corner from another Brown set-piece.

United almost stole the points when Owain fon Williams turned Jose Baxter's low curling strike away for a corner, before Cassidy failed to connect with a great chance late on.
