Owls give Rovers what four

Sheffield Wednesday eased any lingering relegation fears with a convincing 4-0 victory over fellow strugglers Tranmere at Hillsborough. Tommy Miller scored twice while strikers Gary Madine and Neil Mellor chipped in with a goal apiece as the Owls recorded back-to-back home league wins for the first time in five months to move onto the magical 50-point mark. Miller opened the scoring as a result of Wednesday's first attack of any real note, reacting well to power home a header inside the six-yard box from Mellor's nod down following a deep centre from Gary Teale on the right. The home fans did not have long to wait for a second and again it was Mellor who was involved in the build-up as he slotted a fine pass through for Madine, who still had plenty of work to do before he raced through to find the back of the net. Mellor, who scored twice at the weekend, was then upended in the box by Michael Kay which gave Miller the chance to tuck away a third from the penalty spot. The second half was a much closer affair but man-of-the-match Mellor was not to be denied his goal as he latched onto what seemed a lost cause following Clinton Morrison's flick-on and squeezed the ball past Tony Warner from an impossible looking angle.
