Ten-man Toulouse leapfrog Rennes
Published: 30 Oct 2011 - 18:16:58
Toulouse clambered above Rennes into fifth place in Ligue 1 after beating their Brittany rivals 1-0 at home on Sunday.
Etienne Didot's deflected free-kick gave the hosts a 26th-minute lead but they had to defend their advantage with 10 men for over half an hour after Antoine Devaux was sent off for a shin-high foul on Kevin Theophile-Catherine.
Victory took Alain Casanova's team level on points with fourth-placed Lille, who play later on Sunday, while Rennes slipped one place to sixth, having also been eliminated from the League Cup by Ligue 2 side Le Mans in mid-week.
Elsewhere on Sunday, Sochaux earned a 1-1 draw at Nice thanks to a 35th-minute penalty by Algerian international midfielder Ryad Boudebouz.
Nice had taken the lead through Eric Mouloungui and dominated the second half despite being reduced to 10 men when David Hellebuyck was shown a straight red card for treading on Sochaux centre-back Damien Perquis.
On Saturday, a brace of penalties from Nene helped Paris Saint-Germain to a 4-2 win at home to 10-man Caen that kept the title pace-setters three points clear at the top of the table.
Montpellier held on to second place by beating Nancy 2-0 and Lyon are three points further back after late goals from Jimmy Briand and fit-again Yoann Gourcuff gave them a 2-0 victory over Saint-Etienne in the Derby du Rhone.
Meanwhile, an 82nd-minute header by Alou Diarra brought Marseille a 3-2 win at Dijon to give Didier Deschamps' side their third consecutive victory in all competitions.
Defending champions Lille, who visit Inter Milan in the Champions League on Wednesday, will move above Lyon into third place if they avoid defeat at Valenciennes in Sunday's late game.
