Tottenham Hotspur v Swansea City: Villas-Boas Spurs need more Sting
In an electric atmosphere at White Hart Lane, the Villas-Boas side sought to establish themselves as good as any other top flight Premier League side but Swansea proved to be no pushovers. For much of the match it appeared that Tottenham would not be able to break the Swans defence until Vertonghen finally swung a first-time volley into the back of the net.
Michael Laudrup’s Swansea seemed a bit tired this weekend but defended strongly and in numbers against the attacking Spurs. Aaron Lennon and Jermain Defoe were a constant threat, but both were unable to finish with a clean strike. For the Swans, the attacking Spanish midfielder Michu was the lone striker upfront and did not give the Tottenham keeper Lloris much of a headache. His cheeky lob from just inside the Spurs half showed a glimpse of his confidence but for most of the game he was involved in the defence of Spurs’ repeated attacks.
The North London club appeared less effective in their attacks with the absence of the dangerous left-winger Welshman Gareth Bale and the creativity of Modric. Bale’s speed and superb crossing ability could have broken Swansea right at the start of the match. The visitors’ stout defending almost frustrated the Spurs players as well as the home crowd at White Hart Lane. After the Belgian international’s strike for the Spurs, the home team tried to kill the contest by searching for another goal but failed to find a second.
Villas-Boas has a talented team but needs to find a solution to add more bite-force to his side. This club will be a force to reckon with in the future in terms of skill, ability, speed and work-ethic. A killer-instinct with a sting in the tail is the only attribute that’s missing.
